Extendicare was founded in 1968 by Harold Livergant, a dedicated and passionate health care visionary, and his business partner, John MacKay.
Mr. Livergant committed his life to improving the quality of seniors care in Canada. His passion for quality formed the foundation of our company’s vision, mission and values.
Extendicare has grown, since the first home purchased in Ottawa in 1969, to become one of the largest long-term care and home care providers in Canada. Today, we are a respected market leader in providing high quality, innovative and patient-focused care.

1968 | Founded by Harold Livergant and John MacKay, and incorporated with a federal charter under the name Pendexcare Ltd. to operate as a supplier of long-term care services in Canada with an aim of helping to relieve an overburdened hospital system. Near the end of the year, Pendexcare changed its name to Extendicare (Canada) Ltd, and over the years has undergone a number of name changes, with the most recent to Extendicare Inc. |
1969 | Extendicare purchases its first nursing home in Ottawa, Ontario, andbegins construction on four facilities in the province. |
1975 | Extendicare launches ParaMed Home Health Care – now Canada’s largest home care provider. |
1976 | Extendicare expands into the United States with the acquisition of Medco Centers, Inc., a nursing home operator with 25 locations in Indiana and Kentucky. |
1997 | Extendicare acquires Arbor Health Care Company, an operator of 31 nursing facilities in five U.S. states, also with an institutional pharmacy business and outpatient rehabilitation clinics in two states. The pharmacy business is subsequently sold. |
2001 | Extendicare is awarded licenses to construct 11 new facilities, plus an additional five facilities through partnerships with public sector hospitals, as part of a strategic decision by the Province of Ontario to significantly increase nursing home beds in the province. |
2005 | Extendicare acquires Assisted Living Concepts, Inc. (ALC), which adds 177 assisted living facilities in the United States. |
2007 | In October, Extendicare acquires Tendercare (Michigan) Inc. and related entities, adding 30 senior care facilities, involving approximately 3,300 beds, and two development projects in the State of Michigan to its U.S. portfolio. |
2012 | In January, Extendicare sold its U.S. group purchasing organization. |
2014 | Extendicare affects its previously stated objective to reposition the Company into a pure-play Canadian senior care and service provider and announces a definitive agreement to sell its U.S. business in November. |
2015 | Extendicare acquires a competitor’s home health business and enables the Company to expand its already robust home health care business into five additional provinces. |
