March 8 – International Women’s Day

International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is “Pledge for Parity”. As an organization whose team members are primarily woman this is an important issue for us. We are proud that 50% of our Senior Leadership Team are female and that many of our leaders in our homes and centres are women. As well, four of our nine board members are women. That represents 45% compared to only 20.8% across all Canadian Stock Index Companies.

We feel that gender diversity is very important as women have a unique perspective on the services that we provide. Women are more likely to take on the duties associated with caring for an ill or disabled family member or friend and we endeavour to alleviate some of the challenges faced by caregivers through our services. An extra pair of hands to assist with personal care or the ability to have a loved one spend a few nights in a retirement community can offer a much needed break for caregivers.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day I will make the pledge for parity by continuing to support the advancement of women in our organization and by continuing to help build a culture in our organization that values diversity. I encourage others to do the same.
