Whether it’s tapping the power of music to engage a resident with dementia, attending worship services, participating in exercise classes, or reminiscing with a friendly volunteer, there’s always something going on at Extendicare Vista Park Lodge.

We want you to feel at home. We’ll support you in becoming an active and engaged member of your new community and enjoy life to the best of your ability.

We have a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Not only do we work very hard to integrate residents into our community and feel at home, we’re also committed to making families feel at home here too. The following are some of the measures we take to help our residents settle in and also help family members feel comfortable and get involved:

• Welcome Meal: We serve family members a complimentary meal on their first day so they can stay and share a meal with their loved one.
• Personalize Your Room: Residents are encouraged to bring some personal items and furnishings from home to make their rooms feel more familiar and comfortable.
• Resident Partcipation: Staff encourage new residents to participate in activities and make a point of introducing them to other residents, staff and tablemates.
• Family Luncheons: It’s not unusual for us to have as many as 10 family members joining their loved ones for lunch every day.
• Mother’s Day Tea: We host an annual Mother’s Day Tea for residents and family members.
• Frog’s Hollow Petting Zoo: Every summer we have the Frog’s Hollow Petting Zoo come to our home for a family day with residents, staff, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
• Annual Christmas Party: We host an annual Christmas Party, complete with Santa Claus, for residents, families and their children.
• Palliative Care Program: We have an excellent palliative care program for residents and provide support to family members during this very difficult time.
• Quarterly Memorial Service: We host a quarterly Memorial Service to celebrate the lives of residents we have lost and family members are invited to attend.
• Family/Residents Council: We encourage residents and family members to participate in our Family/Residents Council.
• Private Dining Room: We have a private dining room that residents and family members can reserve for private family functions and celebrations.
• Family Participation: Family members are encouraged and welcomed to participate in activities with their loved one.
• Resident Care Plan: Family members, along with their loved one, participate actively in all aspects of the development of the resident’s Care Plan.

We connect you to the community.

Maintaining strong connections to others is essential to keeping people active and involved.

Getting you out into the community and bringing the community into our home is important to your quality of life. Here are some of the ways in which the residents and staff get involved with the community, and how the community connects with us:

• Volunteer Group: We have a very active group of over 40 volunteers.
• Tabs for Wheelchairs: For over 15 years, staff, residents and families have participated in “Tabs for Wheelchairs”. Each year we collect aluminum can tabs that can be exchanged for a wheelchair for a young individual in the community.
• Student Placement Opportunities: We provide placement opportunities for students in the RN, LPN HCA and Pharmacy programs at University of Manitoba and Assiniboine Community College.
• Intergenerational Program: We have a monthly Intergenerational Program that brings elementary school children into our home to spend time with our residents.
• Community Polling Station: Our home is a community polling station for municipal, provincial and federal elections.
