Whether it’s tapping the power of music to engage a resident with dementia, attending worship services, participating in exercise classes, or reminiscing with a friendly volunteer, there’s always something going on at Extendicare Mayerthorpe.

We want you to feel at home. We’ll support you in becoming an active and engaged member of your new community and enjoy life to the best of your ability.

We have a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Not only do we work very hard to integrate residents into our community and feel at home, we’re also committed to making families feel at home here too. The following are some of the measures we take to help our residents settle in and also help family members feel comfortable and get involved:

  • Welcome Meal: We provide a complimentary meal to family members on Admission Day so that they can stay and eat lunch with their loved one.
  • Meet Our Pastor: We have a pastor on staff who meets with family members to provide support if needed and to gather personal background information and a life history about the new residents.
  • Personal History Binder: We create a Personal History Binder for each resident, which is used by staff as a tool to understand the resident and tailor activities to his or her personal background and history.
  • Meet Fellow Residents: We try to fit compatible residents together as roommates and tablemates.
  • Monthly Newsletter: To keep residents and their family members informed about our home we produce and circulate a monthly newsletter.
  • Private Dining Room: We have a Private Dining Room that can be reserved by family members and residents for family functions and celebrations.
  • Christmas Social: We host an annual Christmas Social for residents, their family members and especially grandchildren.
  • Family Events: We host a family barbeque every summer as well as a Mother’s Day tea and a Father’s Day barbeque.
  • Personalize Your Room: Residents are encouraged to bring some personal items and furnishings from home to make their rooms feel more familiar and comfortable.
  • Family Pet Visits: Family pets are always welcomed when family members come to visit.
  • 24/7 Visitor Hours: We have unrestricted visiting hours.
  • Family Participation: Family members are encouraged and welcomed to participate in activities with their loved one.
  • Resident Care Plan: Family members, along with their loved one, participate actively in all aspects of the development of the resident’s Care Plan.
  • Open Door Policy: Our Open Door policy ensures we’re always available should a family member or resident want to talk.

Maintaining strong connections to others is essential to keeping people active and involved.

Getting you out into the community and bringing the community into our home is important to your quality of life. Here are some of the ways in which the residents and staff get involved with the community, and how the community connects with us:

  • Resident Outings: Regular monthly outings for residents include everything from lunch at a local restaurant and a trip to Fort Edmonton to a picnic in the park and an excursion to explore Dinosaur Park.
  • Christmas Lights Tour: We also arrange an annual Christmas Lights tour during the holiday season.
  • Student Placement Opportunities: We provide placement opportunities for students in the RN, LPN HCA and Recreation Therapy programs at Norquest College.
  • Generations Program: We participate in a Generations Program for local high school students who want to get a head start on a career in health care.
  • Interagency Network: We are part of an interagency network of community stakeholders who co-operate to provide support and programs aimed at creating a more caring and supportive community.
  • Christmas Light Up Campaign: Our home participates with other local businesses and stakeholders in the annual Christmas Light Up campaign.
  • Christmas Parade: Every Christmas, we have a float in the Christmas Parade.
  • Seniors’ Week: Every year, our community holds Seniors’ Week to celebrate our elders and we host the event barbeque. It is open to the entire community and well attended by local politicians and other dignitaries.
