We have a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Not only do we work very hard to integrate residents into our community and feel at home, we’re also committed to making families feel at home here too. The following are some of the measures we take to help our residents settle in and also help family members feel comfortable and get involved:

• Meet Your Personal Support Worker: On admission, each new resident is greeted by his or her primary Personal Support Worker.
• Family Introduction: Family members also meet a single contact person on admission who spends a ½ day with them answering questions and introducing them to staff.
• Residents Council: A member of the Residents Council also greets the new resident on admission day and introduces him or her to other residents.
• Welcome Package: Each new resident receives a welcome package consisting of small personal items, and a rose is put in their new room to welcome them.
• Family Council: Our Family Council includes a welcome card in our information package describing what they do in our home and inviting the new family members to join and participate.
• Family Participation: Family members are encouraged and welcomed to participate in activities with their loved one.
• Resident Care Plan: Family members, along with their loved one, participate actively in all aspects of the development of the resident’s Care Plan.
• Social Worker: Whenever a family member wants to talk, we’re here to listen, and our Social Worker is always available to talk privately about coping with the stress and emotions of caregiving.

Maintaining strong connections to others is essential to keeping people active and involved.

Getting you out into the community and bringing the community into our home is important to your quality of life. Here are some of the ways in which the residents and staff get involved with the community, and how the community connects with us:

• Monthly Outings: We organize 2 outings every month for residents. These outings include shopping excursions, lunch, movies and theatre to picnics at the conservation area, trips to the Niagara Falls Casino, dinner and more.
• Christmas Lights Tour: Every Christmas, our residents are taken on a tour of the city to enjoy the bright festive lights.
• Antique Car Show: For a number of years, we have hosted an Antique Car Show, which is organized by our local car club. It’s very popular with family members, residents and the community at large.
• Family Fun Day: Our annual Family Fun Day is a community barbecue where we have carnival games for kids, lots of food and refreshments. The highlight of the afternoon is “Dog Agility”, a local dog trick club, who come and put on a show with the performing pets.
• Student Placement Opportunities: We provide placement opportunities for students in the RN, RPN, PSW and Social Work programs at York University, Sheridan College and George Brown College.
• Halloween Trick-or-Treat: At Halloween, local elementary school students come to our home to trick-or-treat and at Christmas students come in to sing carols for residents, staff and family members.
• Community Group Involvement: Members of management speak to community groups and organizations on the issues of long-term care, Behavioural Support for people living with dementia, palliative care and more.
