Extendicare Mayerthorpe puts their safest foot first

Preparation and teamwork were front and centre at Extendicare Mayerthorpe in Alberta, where everyone came together to ensure each person understood their role in the event of a fire emergency.

When the fire alarm sounded, it wasn’t a real emergency – it was a carefully planned evacuation exercise coordinated by Tracy, the SDC/MDS-RAI Coordinator and Licensed Practical Nurse, and local fire officials. For residents, team members, families, and the four participating local fire departments, the drill was more than a routine safety check. It was a powerful demonstration of collaboration, preparedness, and community spirit.

Preparing with purpose

On the day of the exercise, team members were briefed mid-afternoon and asked to share the news with residents during supper. The message was simple: we’re practicing a fire drill, and the fire department will be joining us. The response was overwhelmingly positive. Team members played a critical role, not only in executing the drill but in ensuring residents felt informed and supported.

A community effort

Extendicare Mayerthorpe’s long-standing relationship with the local fire department was key to the event’s success. Tracy, a lifelong resident of the community and 17-year veteran team member of the home, worked directly with the Mayerthorpe Fire Captain to plan the exercise. The invitation was extended to neighbouring departments, resulting in participation from Sangudo, Cherhill, and Anselmo volunteer fire crews. Participants from all local departments learned valuable lessons that will better equip their teams to support emergency responses.

Residents, familiar with monthly safety drills, embraced the opportunity to engage more deeply. The exercise reinforced the importance of emergency preparedness and gave residents a firsthand look at the professionalism and care of their local fire services.

Putting the plan into action

During the drill, team members followed protocol – checking and flagging rooms and evacuating residents to designated safe areas. A post-drill debrief highlighted strengths and areas for improvement. Firefighters praised the teamwork, efficiency and calm demeanour of Extendicare Mayerthorpe team members and residents.

A culture of safety and care

Safety isn’t just a priority at Extendicare Mayerthorpe – it’s a shared value. Team members regularly participate in tabletop exercises, walkthroughs, and alarmed drills across all shifts.

Extendicare Mayerthorpe is proud of its partnership with emergency services and grateful for the opportunity to train together. These exercises not only strengthen safety protocols -they build trust, foster community and ensure everyone is ready when it matters most.
