Extendicare is laying the foundation for seniors’ care in London, Ontario, as construction is underway on a new long-term care home in the Forest City.
In April, an official groundbreaking ceremony was held to mark the milestone. The event was also featured by local media, including CTV London.
“We’re working to redevelop every single older long-term care home in our network,” said Amie Vahrmeyer, Extendicare’s Vice-President of Long-Term Care Operations in Ontario. “At the heart of this ambitious agenda is a deep commitment to both enhance quality of care for the residents we serve today and to significantly increase access to care, for the growing numbers of seniors who will need the health care system to be there for them tomorrow.”
Residents excited about new long-term care home in London
Extendicare is rebuilding our current home in London to modern design standards to enhance quality of life for the residents we serve. When completed in 2027, the new home will welcome 192 residents; including 170 current residents and 22 new residents awaiting care in the region.
The new home will be larger, with increased space for residents who will have their own private bedrooms, there will be self-contained resident communities that will offer dedicated dining rooms, activity spaces and communal lounges, and more.
Residents like Sharon Slade, who live at the current Extendicare London, say they are excited that construction has begun. Sharon spoke at the event, and when asked what she was looking forward to at the new home – her answer was immediate.
“I get my own room!” Sharon exclaimed and beamed as the crowd cheered and clapped.
Sharon has lived at the current home since the fall of 2024.
“I feel so comfortable there,” she said, adding that that her children “are very pleased with how well I’m taken care of and what a happy place I’m in. The staff is amazing.”
New long-term care home will support seniors care in London
“Our latest new home build here in London marks Extendicare’s ninth redevelopment project to break ground in our effort to increase access to long-term care for Ontarians. We extend our deep appreciation to the Government of Ontario and the City of London for their steadfast support without which this project would not be possible. We continue to advance our plans to redevelop the rest of our older homes to improve resident quality of life and increase seniors care capacity across the province,” said Dr. Michael Guerriere, Extendicare President and CEO.
“Congratulations to the team on the new construction at Extendicare London. Our government is fixing long-term care, and a key part of that plan is building capacity where Ontarians need it,” said Dawn Gallagher Murphy, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Long-Term Care. “Thank you to Extendicare for everything you’re doing to make this possible in our community. You have a strong partnership with the City of London to continue this incredible work on behalf of our seniors in this community,” said Josh Morgan, Mayor of London, at the event which was also featured on Rogers TV London.
High-quality seniors’ health care with dementia-friendly design
The residence will be divided into six self-contained communities, each designed to foster a sense of belonging and security. Other amenities include:
- Country kitchen and café
- Physiotherapy room
- Chapel
- Beauty salon and barber shop
- Several accessible outdoor courtyards and visiting areas
Residents will also benefit from professional nursing, 24-hour personal care, and access to a physician. A designated Memory Care Community will feature innovative wall and door murals, and personalized care for residents living with dementia.
When construction is completed in 2027, this thoughtful, person-centered approach ensures residents will continue to receive compassionate care tailored to their unique needs, to support seniors in the future.
