When you think of physiotherapy, you might picture athletes recovering from injury or post-surgical patients regaining strength. But for one physiotherapist, the most transformative work happens in a quieter place: long-term care.
Extendicare Maple View in Sault St. Marie, Ont., is among Extendicare long-term care homes that are holding local walks and events in support of the Alzheimer Society of Canada. “This Walk is very important to me, not only as a team member supporting our home’s residents, but because my grandmother had Alzheimer's and was a resident here at Maple View,” says Brittany.
Each day in May, when the weather is on their side, team members and residents at Extendicare Port Hope, near Colborne, Ontario, gear up for a daily walk as part of a step challenge at their long-term care home to support the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.

Driven by her love for residents and informed by decades of experience in long-term care, Shantel is leading an effort to inspire pride and improve care among Extendicare Countryside’s team of Personal Support Workers (PSWs).
At Extendicare McGarrell Place in London, Ontario, a dedicated trio lead as the Behavioural Support Ontario (BSO) experts in the home’s Behavioural Support Transitional Unit (BSTU), which is specifically designed for residents living with dementia and complex behavioural needs to help enhance their quality of life.
When Doreen arrived at Extendicare Starwood, she was in critical condition. Suffering from a severe pressure ulcer and other complications, the care team at her local hospital had given her just 72 hours to live.
Despite this, the Starwood team saw Doreen’s fighting spirit and they developed a personalized care plan that involved support from wound care specialists, personal support workers, a physiotherapist, physician, and dietitian to support Doreen’s recovery and journey to strength and wellness.
Walk the halls of Cedars Villa in Calgary, AB, with Malcolm and you’ll see people’s faces light up when they see him. Malcolm volunteers at the home six days a week, escorting residents to and from meals and activities.
