Home / Resident and Family Councils
Resident and Family Councils Across Canada
Residents and families play a vital role in their long-term care home communities. Through Extendicare’s Residents’ Councils and Family Councils, both locally and at a national level – your voice matters. Together, we are helping people live better every day.
Resident Experience Action Council for Homes (REACH)
Extendicare is proud to have a national Resident Experience Action Council for Homes (REACH) comprised of resident and family representatives from our long-term care homes in each province we serve. REACH is co-led by residents and family members and provides valuable input on organizational initiatives and decisions.
The REACH group recently earned a spot in the Health Standards Organization’s (HSO) Leading Practice Library for its approach to resident engagement and co-design. What does that mean? Health care providers across Canada are encouraged to follow Extendicare’s lead to truly listen to and act on resident feedback.

Residents' Councils
Resident Councils are independent groups led by the people who live in our long-term care homes. They provide residents with a forum to share their experiences, offer feedback and suggest ideas to enhance daily life and care. Through regular meetings and an open dialogue with team members, Resident Councils help ensure every resident has a voice in shaping their home environment and the quality of care and services provided. To get involved with the Residents’ Council at your Extendicare home, please speak with the Program Manager.

Family Councils
Family Councils are an important part of our long-term care homes. They bring together family members and loved ones of residents living in our long-term care homes. Family Councils offer a supportive space to share experiences, learn about programs and policies, and work collaboratively with our team to strengthen communication and quality of care. Families play an important role in ensuring our long-term care homes remain responsive, person-centered, and connected to the needs of the people we serve. To get involved with the Family Council at your Extendicare home, please speak with the Program Manager.
