When Cindy and Janet moved into Extendicare Oshawa three years ago, they never expected to become not only roommates but also partners in leadership on their home’s Residents’ Council.
Every Extendicare long-term care home has a Residents’ Council – a place where all residents are welcome to participate, share ideas and get involved.
Today, as President and Vice President of the council, Cindy and Janet play an important role in ensuring every voice in their community is heard. These councils play a vital role and are recognized every September during Residents’ Council Week. To Cindy, residents’ councils foster a sense of community in long-term care homes.
“They help our residents and team members be informed about what is going on at our home,” she says.
How Extendicare Oshawa’s Residents’ Council supports new residents
“At first we were both nervous to join the Residents’ Council, but the team members at the home assured us that they would support us if we ever needed any help,” says Janet. “So far, it’s been good.”
Cindy and Janet have partnered and advised team members on numerous events, attended committee meetings in the home, and actively engaged their fellow residents every step of the way, often being the first “hello” to newcomers.

What’s next on their council’s agenda?
“We are currently brainstorming ways we can show our appreciation to the activity aides at Extendicare Oshawa,” says Cindy. “They worked exceptionally hard this summer and planned so many incredible events for our home. It’s a small way we can say thank you and show our gratitude.”
The Residents’ Council also has arranged for the local Alzheimer Society chapter to visit the home in September to give a presentation about dementia.
“Cindy and Janet have done an incredible job so far on Residents’ Council. Our team is always here to support them. They have taken on these new roles in stride and give voices to all the residents here at Extendicare Oshawa.” says Kara, Recreation Program Aide at Extendicare Oshawa.
Cindy and Janet’s leadership reminds us how powerful resident voices can be in shaping community life. Their friendship, dedication, and advocacy are helping ensure Extendicare Oshawa is not just a place to live, but a true home.
