CTV News Winnipeg features Extendicare Poseidon Care Centre team member runs across Canada inspired residents and Terry Fox

Jackson Charron-Okerlund, a Recreation Aide at Extendicare Poseidon Care Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba who ran across Canada raising over $100,000 for cancer research in just 160 days, was recently highlighted on CTV News Winnipeg, on Terry Fox Day in the province.

Jackson says he was inspired to run across the country in honour of Terry Fox, and also by residents at the long-term care home.

“When I first began working at Poseidon Care Centre, I didn’t yet realize the profound impact the residents would have on my life,” said Jackson. “Day after day, I witnessed stories unfold—rich, textured lives filled with love, resilience, and legacy.”

Jackson’s run from coast to coast

In 2023, Jackson’s journey started at the Terry Fox memorial in St. John’s, Newfoundland. After more than five months and 7,000 kilometres, he completed his run in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia (Terry’s hometown).

Jackson says he drew strength from two sources: the legacy of Terry Fox and the residents of Poseidon Care Centre who cheered Jackson on every step of the way thanks to the videos, photos and live streams he posted  on social media.

Now back in Winnipeg, Jackson has returned to his role at Poseidon, where he continues to bring joy and energy to residents.

“It was a full-circle moment coming back to Poseidon and caring for the residents who were cheering me on daily,” says Jackson.

On August 4th,  the 45th Anniversary of the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope, Jackson held a special presentation for Poseidon residents and families to learn more about his journey. Everyone was excited o learn from Jackson and spend time with him.

Temenuzhka Koleva, Executive Director of Poseidon, says Jackson’s return has uplifted the entire home. “Jackson is the real deal. Everyone at Poseidon, from our team members to residents and their families, knows that he is genuine, kind and such a light to be around. We are over the moon to have him work with us again.”

“Every day, I’m reminded of why we do what we do: to help people live fully, with dignity and compassion, from the first chapter of life to the very last,” says Jackson.

This is a meaningful local story that celebrates Terry Fox’s legacy while highlighting Jackson’s compassion and his dedication to older adults in the community.
